It’s happened again: the dog, the kids, the husband… they’ve spilt something on the carpet. Before you reach for the Folex or other bottled “stain remover” product in your closet, ask yourself this important question… “Do I have a way to flush/rinse this product out after applying it?”
If the answer is no, then you probably shouldn’t be applying the product. We get into homes and offices everyday where people have tried these products and more often then not, they’ve either used too much and now the spot attracts dirt because there’s so much soap in the fibres, or worse but very common, the product has actually stripped the colour from the carpet itself.
Spray bottle stain removal products are VERY concentrated. You should only be using a quarter of what they suggest, but even then, if you have no way to flush the chemical back out (with a small Bissell device for example), then you should really just leave the product in the closet.
If you want to tackle the stain in a non-abrasive and chemical free way, we suggest a mixture of hot water and vinegar. Boil some water and mix two thirds hot water with one third white vinegar. Apply the mixture to your stain (use only enough to cover the stain; there’s no need to drench the carpet). Using a clean, light-coloured towel or paper tower, apply pressure to the stain (step on, step off, step on, step off—or use your hands) until the moisture is absorbed. Repeat as necessary. NEVER RUB the carpet. Apply pressure only.
This trick will work with a large number of stain types, so give it a try!
